The Tombo Katana Shinken is a flagship blade from the YariNoHanzo Superior Series, offering a rare combination of refined performance and artistic craftsmanship. Inspired by the symbolism of the dragonfly (Tombo)—a revered emblem of courage, agility, and focus in Japanese culture—this sword is designed for practitioners who demand both technical precision and aesthetic mastery.
Crafted with Maru Kitae construction using 1095 high carbon steel, the blade is clay tempered, producing a vibrant and authentic Gunome Choji hamon. This traditional wave pattern not only enhances the visual impact of the blade, but also signifies its functional excellence. The bohi (fuller) improves balance and provides the audible tachikaze—the whistling feedback that experienced martial artists rely on to gauge correct technique.
This katana is razor sharp, fully functional, and ideal for advanced training in Iaido, Kenjutsu, and Kendo kata. Its full tang construction, secured with two mekugi (bamboo pins), ensures maximum structural reliability and long-term use under rigorous conditions.
The tsuka is wrapped in brown silk tsukaito using the elegant and traditional Hineri Maki style, reinforced with hishigami for durability and form retention. Beneath the tsuka lies genuine Samegawa (ray skin), contributing both grip integrity and a classic aesthetic.
What truly sets the Tombo Katana apart is its custom koshirae, featuring a dragonfly motif on the tsuba, fuchi, and kashira. These details are deeply symbolic, representing the persistence and sharp vision of the dragonfly—qualities prized by samurai. These fittings are crafted with fine detail, ensuring the sword stands out not only in performance, but in presentation.
The black lacquered saya is constructed from hardwood and fitted with buffalo horn koiguchi, kurikata, and kojiri—components that reinforce durability and elegance while honoring traditional Japanese sword making. The katana is supplied without sageo, giving practitioners the freedom to customize according to their ryu or preferences. An elegant burgundy cotton sword bag is included for storage and protection.
Each Tombo Katana Shinken is inspected under YariNoHanzo’s strict quality control process, ensuring precision in every detail. Whether you're a dedicated martial artist, a professional instructor, or a collector of functional Japanese blades, the Tombo Katana offers unmatched craftsmanship, rich symbolism, and performance you can trust.
